Read Option is the zone read run play out of Doubles Flex Y Off Close in Shotgun 11 personnel. The diagram shows the QB and RB in the backfield with the exchange point marked by the crossing yellow and red arrows, indicating the mesh point where the QB reads the play side defensive end before deciding to hand off or pull and keep. This is a pure run play designed to attack light boxes and beat aggressive downhill run fits, with the offensive line executing zone blocking up front while the three receivers stay uninvolved as decoys to hold defenders in coverage. The primary read progression is simple: the QB keys the unblocked edge defender at the mesh point, handing to the RB on inside zone if that defender crashes down, or pulling the ball and attacking the perimeter if he stays home.
Watch the play side defensive end before the snap; if he is lined up wide or shows contain responsibility, expect the QB to pull and keep. Identify the linebacker depth since stacked or crashing linebackers get gashed by inside zone if they misread the mesh point. This play struggles against defenses that stay disciplined with the end staying home and a linebacker filling downhill on the give read, so a scrape exchange defeats both options at once. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the QB, since Read Option loses value when the human user takes away the keeper by shadowing the quarterback. Base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with disciplined edge players and inside linebackers who key the mesh point are the best answer to shut this play down completely.
Check the box count before the snap and only call this against six or fewer defenders in the box to guarantee a numbers advantage. Use this play on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses expect pass out of Doubles personnel. Motion or shift is not needed here since the three-receiver spread already forces defenders out of the box, so trust the natural numbers advantage. Pair this with Y-Sail or Mtn Dagger Y In from the same set to keep defenses honest, since both plays start from the identical Doubles Flex Y Off Close look and punish defenders who sell out against the run. If the defensive end crashes hard on every snap, pull the ball every time and take it outside since the defense is selling its hand.
