Mtn Slot Post lines up out of Shotgun Doubles Flex Y Off Close with pre-snap motion bringing a receiver across before the snap. Post snap you get a four man route concept: the far outside receiver runs a deep go up the sideline, the inside slot pushes vertical then breaks into a deep post, the tight end runs a corner route out of the bunch look, and the backfield motion man works a shallow drag across the field to the opposite sideline as a checkdown and outlet. This is a man beater built to attack single high safety looks, with the post designed to split the safety and hash, the corner route occupying the flat defender, and the drag giving you a built in answer versus a blitz. Primary read progression starts with the post, works to the corner route in the middle of the field, and comes down to the drag as the safety valve.
Defensive Reads
Key the free safety at the snap, if he stays deep middle and does not rotate you are likely facing cover 3 or cover 1 which opens up the post route behind the linebackers. Watch the cornerback aligned over the post runner, if he opens his hips to the sideline early he is playing off man or zone and the post should sit down in the window behind him. Identify any user controlled defender flowing with the motion man since that shows man coverage and tells you the post has a clean angle to split the safety. Against cover 2 or cover 4 shells with two deep safeties the post gets squeezed, so be ready to check down to the drag or throw the corner route to the tight end before the safety can rotate over. Blitzes off the edge are the biggest threat since the deep drops on post and corner take time to develop, so watch linebacker depth pre-snap and be ready to get the ball out quick to the drag if you see extra rushers creeping toward the line.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are getting man coverage and the post should win versus a single high safety. Look to attack this play on second and medium to second and long situations where defenses are more likely to play single high shells to defend the sideline go route. Hot route the drag into a deeper crossing route if you are seeing a lot of underneath zone drops sitting on the shallow area. Pair this play with Mtn Dagger Y In or Mtn Dig Under in your play calling sequence since both share the same motion and formation look but attack different levels, keeping the defense guessing on whether the post or the in cut is coming. If you see two deep safeties pre-snap, be ready to check down early to the drag route since the post window will be tighter against split safety shells.
