Zone Fake Jet is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Doubles Flex Y Off Close that opens with jet motion across the backfield to sell the run before the QB sets up in the pocket. The diagram shows the offensive line sliding in zone blocking protection while the play fakes the outside zone handoff, holding linebackers for a beat before routes develop downfield. This is a play-action shot play designed to freeze run-fits and linebacker flow, with the primary read starting on the backside window created by the fake before working to the frontside route combo.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they bite hard on the zone fake and step up, the play-action window opens up immediately behind them. Check safety rotation before the snap, single high shells are more vulnerable to the play fake than two high shells that stay disciplined. Identify if a defender is spying or trailing the jet motion, which tips man coverage and creates a natural pick or rub opportunity. Man coverage with aggressive underneath linebackers gets exposed hardest since they are the primary target of the run fake. Zone defenses that stay honest and do not crash on the fake, along with disciplined two high safety looks, are the toughest shells to attack with this concept and may require checking to a different play in the set.
Use jet motion pre-snap to identify if the defense follows the motion man, which reveals man coverage or a spy assignment on the jet threat.
Call this on early downs like first and second down when defenses are more willing to sell out on run support and bite on the zone fake.
Pair this with Inside Zone or Read Option earlier in a series so linebackers start keying run fits, then punish that aggression with Zone Fake Jet later in the same drive.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or speed cut if you see the safety cheating hard to the play-action side, giving you a simple answer versus zone rotation.
Take a play-action shot downfield when linebackers show blitz indicators pre-snap, since the fake and extra protection time create explosive gains against overaggressive fronts.
