This is a proven zone beater because the stick route sits down in the void between the flat defender and the underneath linebacker, and the primary read progression starts with the TE stick, then works to the corner route as the clear-out, before working backside if the underneath is taken away.
Defensive Reads
Identify if the defense shows two high safeties pre-snap, since that usually softens the flat and stick zones and makes the TE an easy completion. Watch the underneath linebacker depth at the snap, since a linebacker sitting shallow will jump the stick route and bait a turnover if you force it. Look for a user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone, since Y Stick's stick route is a common target for spy or lurk assignments in competitive play. Check cornerback alignment on the backside receivers, since press man coverage without help over the top can shut down the deep out and dig combo. Recognize blitz packages that bring five or six rushers, since the quick stick and corner routes are designed to get the ball out fast before pressure arrives.
Usage Tips
Read the flat defender before the snap to see if he is sitting at five yards, which tells you the stick route to the TE will be open immediately.
Hot route the backside outside receiver into a quick slant or drag if you see man coverage press at the line, since the stick concept alone struggles against tight man with no natural rub.
Use this play on third and short or second and medium, since the stick route is designed to pick up quick, easy yardage against zone drops.
Pair Y Stick with Mtn Dagger Y In in the same set, since Dagger attacks deep zones and forces the defense to respect verticals, opening up the stick window underneath.
Look to throw the corner route quickly if the safety rotates late to a single high shell, since the corner will exploit space vacated by rotating coverage.
