Play diagram for Mtn HB Angle from Shotgun Doubles Flex Y Off Close in Madden 27

Breakdown

Mtn HB Angle out of Shotgun Doubles Flex Y Off Close is a man beater built around the HB Angle route out of the backfield. The two receivers to the left run a mesh style cross, with one settling into a shallow drag and the other pushing to a deep over route breaking left, designed to pick off man defenders and create natural rubs. On the right side the Y and outside receiver run a corner and flat combo, while the HB releases from the backfield and breaks flat then angles inside underneath the linebackers, giving the quarterback an easy answer against blitzes or aggressive man coverage. Primary read progression starts with the HB Angle against man or blitz looks, then works to the crossing routes on the left if the underneath is cleared out, and finally to the corner and flat combo on the right if the defense sits soft.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify if the middle linebacker or nickel is walked up over the HB, that alignment signals man coverage and tells you the Angle route is live. Watch the safety depth over the crossing routes, two deep safeties suggest zone coverage and you should key on the corner route and deep crosser instead of the Angle. Post snap, track any user controlled defender flowing toward the HB out of the backfield, if he sits and lurks in the middle the Angle route will be covered and you must progress to the crossing routes. Look for linebackers blitzing off the edge, since the HB Angle is designed to exploit vacated underneath zones when blitzers commit upfield. Against man coverage with no safety help over the top, the crossing routes on the left should win versus trail technique due to the natural rub created by the mesh concept.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or third and short when you expect man coverage or a blitz, since the HB Angle is your built in answer against pressure.

Check the middle linebacker depth pre snap, if he is stacked tight to the line the Angle route will win immediately once the HB releases outside then breaks inside.

Hot route the far outside receiver on the crossing side into a quick slant or hitch if you see press man corners jumping the shallow routes.

Pair this call with Mtn HB Fade or Mtn HB Out from the same set so the defense has to respect the HB attacking the perimeter as well as working underneath.

Against zone shells, take the shot to the deep crossing route or corner route first before checking down to the Angle route since zone defenders will sit on shallow crossers.
