Mtn Dagger Y In is a classic Dagger concept run out of Doubles Flex Y Off Close, with a pre-snap motion man crossing to the boundary side before the snap. The diagram shows a deep vertical seam route clearing out the middle, a dig route sitting underneath breaking across the field, an out breaking flat route to the boundary from the motion man, and a corner route stemming to the sideline from the far outside receiver, while the backfield player releases outside on a checkdown option. This is a man beater and Cover 3 beater built off the vertical-and-dig combo, with the deep seam clearing space for the Y In (dig) to settle into the void behind linebackers and in front of deep zone defenders, and the primary read progression starts with the deep seam to hold the safety, then works to the dig as the first real answer, before checking down to the flat or backfield outlet.
Defensive Reads
Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow to jump the dig route the seam route behind him will be wide open for a big gain. Key the safety over the top, in Cover 3 he should widen or bail deep, and any hesitation on his part means the dig route window is closing fast for the quarterback. Track the cornerback assigned to the motion man, if he follows across the formation it confirms man coverage and lets the offense attack with the dig or corner as a scheme beater. This concept struggles against a disciplined Cover 4 or Cover 6 shell where safeties stay deep and outside linebackers rob the dig, since it removes the soft spot the route is designed to exploit. A well timed nano blitz or interior pressure package can disrupt this play before the dig fully develops, so watch for stacked fronts or shown pressure at the line pre-snap and be ready to jump the quick flat or backfield checkdown.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are almost certainly getting man coverage and can key the dig or corner route as a hot man beater.
Hold the deep seam route with your eyes for a full beat to freeze the middle linebacker and safety, this opens the dig route behind them for an easy completion on Cover 3 or Cover 2 shells.
Against Cover 2, target the corner route on the outside since it attacks the seam between the cornerback and safety, this is your money shot when the safety bites on the dig.
Call this on early downs or second and medium to keep the defense honest, then sequence it with Mtn HB Angle or Mtn Slot Post from the same set so defenders cannot sit on the dig read after seeing it once.
If the defense shows a hard blitz look pre-snap, get the ball out quickly to the flat route off the motion or check to the backfield outlet since your protection may not hold up long enough for the dig to develop.
