PA Snag is a play-action pass out of Shotgun Doubles Flex Y Off Close that runs the classic Snag concept to one side while the backside receiver runs a vertical route on his own. The play-action fake from the RB draws linebackers up, and the Snag concept (corner route, flat route, and hitch/spot underneath) floods the boundary to create horizontal and vertical stress on zone defenders. This is primarily a Cover 3 beater, and the read progression starts with the corner route deep, works down to the flat route, and settles on the underneath spot route if the flat is taken away.
Key the middle linebacker at the snap. If he steps up hard on the play-action fake, the underneath spot route will be wide open in the vacated zone. Watch the flat defender. Against Cover 3, the corner has to choose between the flat route and the corner route, and whichever he leaves is your throw. Identify the deep safety alignment pre-snap. Two high safeties can bracket the corner route and force you to check down early. User lurk defenders sitting in the shallow hook zone can jump the spot route, so look off that defender with your eyes before committing to the throw. Man coverage with no safety help is where this play struggles most, since the corner route lacks the natural rub to separate from tight man technique.
Use this on early downs or in second and medium situations where linebackers are more likely to bite on the run fake.
Check the middle of the field pre-snap. If you see a single high safety and the corners are playing off, that is your green light to trust the Snag concept against Cover 3.
Hot route the backside vertical receiver into a comeback or dig if you are getting single coverage with no safety help over the top.
Pair this call with Y Stick or Escape earlier in a series so linebackers respect the quick game and bite harder on the play-action fake here.
If the defense shows heavy blitz pre-snap, get the ball out fast to the flat route since the play-action fake will slow your protection.
