Mtn Switch Corner is a Shotgun Doubles Flex Y Off Close pass play built around a switch release corner concept to the boundary and a shallow cross on the backside for a natural rub against man coverage. The near slot runs a corner route up the sideline while the outside receiver clears underneath into a short crossing route, creating a switch release that confuses man defenders and levels the coverage vertically. The backside features a receiver dragging across the field on a shallow crosser while the tight end works a quick out breaking flat, and the running back releases into a flat route to the play side as a checkdown or hot beater against blitz. Primary read is the switch corner route first, then work to the shallow drag or the running back flat if the corner is capped by a deep defender.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the corner assigned to the switch release is playing outside leverage or inside leverage, this tells you whether the switch concept will actually confuse his assignment. Watch the strong safety depth at the snap, if he sinks hard on the corner route it signals a two high shell rolling to help over the top, which favors the shallow drag read instead. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest bust risk against this play, so if you see press man with a single high safety cheating to the opposite side, expect a shot play here. Zone coverage with a flat defender sitting on the running back's release can jump the checkdown, so track that defender's leverage before committing to the flat as a bailout option. Blitz looks with the linebacker crashing off the edge should be picked up by the running back's route if he stays in to chip, but if he releases immediately into his route the quarterback has no extra blocker, so identify blitz packages pre-snap and consider hot routing the back to stay home.
Usage Tips
Look for single high safety shells before the snap since the switch corner concept thrives against man coverage where the release confuses the defender assigned to the outside receiver.
Use the shallow drag as your answer against zone coverage or when the corner route gets squeezed by a deep half safety rolling over the top.
Hot route the running back to a quick check release if you see a blitz look with more than four defenders showing at the line, this gives you a built in answer versus pressure.
Pair this play with Mtn Slot Post or Mtn Dagger Y In earlier in a series so the defense has to respect vertical shots, making the switch release corner route even more dangerous later in the drive.
Best used on second or third and medium situations where you have room to test a corner route without needing to live on a checkdown every snap.
