Y Trail out of Shotgun Bunch Open Offset sends the bunch receivers on a layered crossing concept while the backside X runs a deep dig across the field. The Y (tight end) works the trail route underneath, sitting behind the crosser to create a natural pick and rub against man coverage, while the outside bunch receiver clears vertically to the corner and the inside bunch man runs a flat/out breaking route as a checkdown. The single receiver to the boundary runs a deep comeback/post read away from the concept, giving the quarterback a two-level read to the trips side before working to the backside dig. This is a man beater built on natural rub traffic from the bunch alignment, with the primary progression starting on the trail route underneath, moving to the deep crosser, and finishing on the backside dig if the trips side is capped.
Defensive Reads
Diagnose man versus zone immediately by watching the linebacker and safety depth at the snap, since man coverage will have defenders turn and run with the bunch receivers. Watch for a lurking underneath defender sitting in the trail route window, common in Cover 3 buzz or Tampa 2 looks, which can jump the trail route if the quarterback stares it down. Key the boundary corner on the backside dig route, since press man or aggressive jump coverage there can bait an interception if the quarterback does not layer the throw properly. Identify blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the trail concept develops with some timing delay and a nano blitz or overload pressure can force a quick checkdown to the flat route. Against Cover 4 or quarters coverage, look for the safety to the bunch side sinking on the vertical clear out route, which opens a throwing lane for the trail route underneath if the defense does not have a true underneath robber.
Usage Tips
Attack man coverage first since the bunch alignment naturally picks defenders trailing in man, especially against Cover 1 and Cover 3 man match shells.
Presnap, check for a single high safety and press corners on the bunch, which confirms man coverage and green lights the trail concept as your first read.
If the defense shows two high shells or soft zone, work the backside dig to the boundary receiver since zone defenders will sit and clog the trail and flat routes.
Hot route the flat route to a wide receiver drag or spot if you see linebackers sitting shallow in zone, giving you a faster answer against Cover 2 or Cover 4.
