Dig Return is a bunch-based passing concept out of Shotgun Bunch Open Offset with 11 personnel, using a pre-snap motion piece to shift the bunch look before the snap. The outside receiver runs a vertical route up the numbers while the two inside bunch receivers work a return concept: one man breaks outward on a quick out or flat route (shown in red) and the other crosses underneath on a dig back toward the opposite side. This is a man beater at its core, since the crossing dig and return route create natural rub traffic and separation against man defenders trailing through the bunch, while the vertical stretches the deep third to hold safety help. The primary read progression starts with the vertical shot if the safety bites down on the underneath traffic, then works to the dig as the middle read, with the flat/return route as the checkdown against a hard squeeze.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the safety alignment first: a two-high shell that rotates down after motion signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 match, which invites the dig throw into the middle void. Watch the corner over the bunch at the snap: if he sinks with the vertical release instead of jumping the underneath routes, that confirms zone drops and the dig sits in the soft spot behind the linebackers. Track the flat defender's leverage on the return route since a hard squeeze by a cornerback or nickel forces the quarterback to climb the progression to the dig or vertical instead of settling for the checkdown. Look for a user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the intermediate throwing lane, since a Mike or Sam linebacker sitting in the passing window can jump the dig route and bait an interception. This concept struggles against man coverage with a deep half safety cheating toward the dig's landmark, and it is vulnerable to a nano blitz off the edge if protection is not adjusted before the snap.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap: if the defender follows the motion man across the formation, you are getting man coverage and the dig should win off the rub.
Take the vertical shot early against single-high safety looks where the corner is playing outside leverage, since the dig and return routes will occupy underneath defenders and open the seam.
Hot route the flat/return receiver into a quick option route against Cover 2 to give yourself a rhythm throw when the dig is capped by a robber or hook defender.
Pair this play with RPO Read Bubble or RPO Alert Out earlier in a series to condition the defense into keying the flat, then hit the dig behind them once linebackers start jumping the short routes.
Best called on second and medium or third and long when you need a defined intermediate window, since the dig sits down against zone and the vertical punishes any late safety rotation.
