Dig Return

Dig Return is a Bunch Open Offset concept out of Shotgun that uses motion to shift the bunch look before the snap, then attacks the middle of the field with a deep dig breaking back across the field. The lone outside receiver runs a vertical seam to stretch the defense downfield while the bunch releases with a corner route and a shallow return route underneath, giving the quarterback layered depth from the flat all the way to the deep vertical. This is a man beater first and foremost since the dig and return combo create natural rub and pick opportunities against man defenders trying to stay in phase, though the vertical can also punish single high shells if the safety bites on the underneath traffic. Primary read progression starts with the vertical seam if the corner is playing off or if you see single high man, then works down to the dig as the primary intermediate answer, and finishes with the return route as the checkdown against pressure or tight coverage.
