RPO Read Bubble is designed out of the Shotgun Bunch Open Offset set with a bubble screen to the flat from the bunch side, a vertical release from the inner slot receiver, and an inside zone hand off to the HB. The QB reads the alley defender or overhang: if he crashes down on the run fit, pull and throw the bubble screen, if he sits or widens to cover the bubble, hand it off to the HB running inside zone. The backside single receiver runs a deep out that is not part of the RPO read and simply occupies the corner. This is an RPO run/pass option that stresses light boxes and attacks defenses that key on the backfield.
Defensive Reads
Watch the alley or slot defender over the bunch before the snap, if he is aligned tight to the line of scrimmage he is likely reading run fast and will crash, take away the bubble by having him sink and shuffle instead Identify single high versus two high shells, single high with a hard-crashing linebacker is what this concept is designed to punish since the bubble opens instantly Get a defender to shadow the bubble receiver in man coverage or bracket the flat in zone to remove the easy completion and force the quarterback to trust the run Send a run blitz or nano blitz off the edge away from the bunch to disrupt inside zone timing while still respecting the bubble with a spot dropper Watch for the backside out route only if you are playing a true man beater version of this concept, otherwise ignore it and stay focused on the numbers advantage to the bunch side
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and identify whether the defense has six or more in the box, which should push your decision toward the bubble screen instead of forcing the run
Key the alley defender or slot corner over the bunch, if he crashes hard on run action pull it immediately for the bubble
Use this on early downs like first and second and ten when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts and honor the run fake
Pair this with RPO Alert Out and RPO Peek WR Screen from the same set so the defense cannot key one specific flat threat, forcing conflict on the same defender every snap
Motion is not shown on this diagram so keep the bunch alignment static and let the numbers advantage on the bubble side do the work post snap
If the defense shows two high safeties with no extra run support, trust the give on inside zone since the second level should be lighter
