Inside Zone out of Shotgun Bunch Open Offset is a pure zone run play with a bunch alignment tight to one side and a single isolated receiver split wide. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, stepping in unison toward the play side to create a natural running lane based on defensive flow, while the HB reads the double team and cutback lanes rather than a predetermined hole. This is a zone run designed to beat over-committed run fits and slow-flowing linebackers, with the primary read being the play side double team at the point of attack before working to the backside cutback if defenders crash too hard.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check linebacker depth, stacked linebackers sitting tight to the line signal a run blitz or gap plug package. Watch safety rotation before the snap, a single high safety with the other rotating down often means the defense is selling out to stop the run. Post-snap, key the play side defensive tackle and linebacker fit, if they get sealed by the zone double team, expect the cutback lane to open on the backside. This play struggles against disciplined gap-sound fronts like a 4-3 Under or defenses that stay home with linebackers instead of flowing hard to the play call. Watch for a user-controlled defender crashing down early from the second level, that is the key indicator to bounce the run outside or cut it back immediately.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into showing blitz or run fit before the snap so you know which gap will be softest.
Check the box count before calling this play, if the defense has six or more in the box, consider audibling to a play-action or RPO from this same set instead.
Combine this with RPO Read Bubble or RPO Alert Out from the same formation so the defense cannot sit on the run without opening up the bunch side quickly.
On early downs like first or second and short, this play punishes light boxes and defenses in nickel or dime personnel that are not built to stop interior zone runs.
Use manual control on your HB to press the play side hole and cut off the backside cutback lane if the defensive line stunts or crashes down hard.
