The two outside receivers run straight verticals to occupy deep defenders while the bunch runningback releases on a swing route to the flat and the nearest bunch receiver hooks up on a quick spot route in the void behind him, with a shallow drag crossing underneath from the backside. This is a Cover 3 beater built to attack the flat to curl to hook zone conflict, and the primary read progression starts with the spot route, works down to the swing in the flat, and comes back to the drag if the underneath zone widens.

Defensive Reads

Presnap identify the flat defender assignment, if a linebacker or slot corner is aligned soft outside the bunch he is likely responsible for both the swing and any shallow crossers. Watch the deep third or deep half safety over the bunch side, if he sinks hard on the outside vertical the spot route will sit wide open in the underneath void. Key the curl to hook defender, in Cover 3 he has to choose between the spot route and the drag, sit and read his hips to know which throw is coming open first. This concept struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 6 with disciplined underneath zone matching, since extra eyes on the flat and hook areas take away both the swing and spot options. Man coverage with a linebacker matched on the runningback is the best defensive answer, since it removes the swing outlet and forces the quarterback into the tighter spot or drag windows against traffic.

Usage Tips
