This is a base run play designed to punish aggressive pass rush and blitz packages, and the primary read is the HB reading the interior line flow to pick between the frontside gap or a backside cutback.

Defensive Reads

Watch for defensive tackles and ends staying home instead of crashing upfield, since disciplined gap control defense is the biggest counter to HB Draw. Linebacker depth at the snap tells you everything: shallow linebackers who bite on pass sets get gashed, while linebackers sitting at depth reading backfield action will clog the cutback lane. Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a nano blitz alignment with defensive ends crashing inside, since that opens a natural running lane for the draw. Man coverage shells with linebackers in trail technique on the bunch tend to overrun the play, while zone shells with linebackers reading run-pass keys are tougher to exploit. Post-snap, track user-controlled defenders flying to the football too fast, since disciplined user play sitting and reading the mesh point can blow this play up before it develops.

Usage Tips

Call this play on early downs or in obvious passing situations like second and long to catch overzealous pass rushers crashing upfield.

Motion is not needed here, but check the box count pre-snap and confirm you have at least five or six defenders in the box before committing to the handoff.

If the defense shows a heavy blitz look with linebackers creeping to the line, this is your best answer since the delayed action lets blitzers run themselves out of the play.

Pair this with RPO Alert Out or RPO Read Bubble from the same set so the defense has to respect both the draw and quick perimeter throws off similar formation looks.

Use manual controlled blocking with your fullback or extra blocker if the defense shows a stacked front, and always have your HB press the hole rather than bounce too early against disciplined gap defense.
