Overview

Pistol Full Panther is the heaviest backfield set in the Pistol family, aligning the quarterback four yards deep with a fullback and halfback flanking him in a full house look. Where standard Pistol sets spread three or four receivers and lean on tempo passing, Full Panther condenses the formation to two receivers and a tight end, which drags safeties down and forces the defense to commit numbers to the box. The backfield symmetry is the whole point: the defense cannot key run direction pre-snap because both backs are eligible as lead blockers, dive threats, or pitch men.

The play list is built around option football. PA Triple Opt, Triple Option, Read Option, and Read Option WK all attack the unblocked edge defender, while HB Dive WK and HB Power O punish defenses that widen to stop the option. That run threat is what makes the pass game work. PA Boot Rt and PA Flood FB Slip use play action off the same backfield mesh, and the fullback slip route consistently leaks into vacated middle zones once linebackers bite on the run action. Full House Pro gives you a max protection concept for deep shots against single high.

Because the set only fields two wideouts, matchup hunting happens through isolation rather than volume. Put your best receiver on the single side and you will regularly see a corner with no help over the top when the defense rolls a safety into the box. Slants gives you a quick answer to that pressure look, and motioning the fullback out widens the box count so you can count defenders before you snap.

Strengths

  • Triple Option and PA Triple Opt force the defense to defend three run gaps with unblocked edge players, which punishes single gap contain rules and user-controlled edge defenders who overcommit.
  • Play action off PA Boot Rt and PA Flood FB Slip freezes linebackers and opens the fullback slip route into vacated hook zones against Cover 3 and Cover 4.
  • Heavy personnel pulls safeties into the box, isolating your single side receiver for a streak or fade hot route against man coverage with no deep help.
  • HB Power O and HB Dive WK give you a downhill answer when the defense widens to stop the option, and the full house alignment hides which back is carrying until the mesh point.
  • Full House Pro provides max protection out of a run look, which is the cleanest way to take a deep shot when the defense is selling out to stop the run on short yardage.

Weaknesses

  • Only two receivers on the field means no answer to heavy man coverage with double teams, and cover 2 man with a robber will smother the short concepts.
  • Option plays are extremely vulnerable to user-controlled edge defenders who play the quarterback and let AI clean up the back, which kills the read entirely.
  • Inside blitz packages that overload the A gaps get home before the option mesh point develops, and a scrape exchange forces a fumble prone pitch.
  • Route depth is shallow across the board, so on third and long you are relying on play action that the defense has no reason to respect.
  • Predictable tendency risk is high since the run pass split in this set is heavily run weighted, and opponents who log your habits will simply crash the box every snap.

Usage Tips

Read the edge defender pre-snap and check the safety depth. If both safeties are back and the box shows six or fewer, run Triple Option or Read Option. If a safety is down in the box, get out of the run and use PA Boot Rt or Slants.

Motion the fullback out to a slot position to count defenders and to force the defense to declare man or zone. If a linebacker follows him wide, you have man coverage and your single side receiver is isolated.

Hot route the tight end to a corner or streak on PA Flood FB Slip to add a vertical stem behind the flood levels, which stretches Cover 3 curl flat defenders who sit on the fullback slip.

Use HB Dive WK and HB Power O early to establish that you will run downhill, then come back to PA Triple Opt on the same look once the linebackers start flowing hard.

Save Full House Pro for second and short or fourth and short inside the opponent's forty. Defenses commit run in those spots and the max protection buys enough time for a one on one deep shot.
