PA Triple Opt is a play-action shot play out of the Pistol Full Panther set that sells the triple option run fake before working a deep vertical concept off the boot fake. The play-action fake freezes linebackers and safeties who are keying run fits, opening up seams and voids in the middle of the field. This is primarily a zone beater against teams that key run action with their second and third level defenders, and the primary read progression starts with the deep outside route before working back to the intermediate crosser and finally the checkdown underneath.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap. If linebackers step up hard to fill run gaps on the play-action fake, the middle of the field opens up for the crosser and deep seam routes. Identify two high safeties before the snap. If they stay deep and do not bite on the run fake, this play struggles against sound zone shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4 that keep help over the top. Look for a user-controlled defender flashing into a shallow crosser or lurk zone. That is the biggest threat to this play since the intermediate route sits in a common lurk spot for aggressive human defenders. Check corner positioning pre snap. Corners playing off man or bail technique give up the run fake easier, while press man corners can disrupt the timing of the outside vertical route. Diagnose blitz timing post snap. A fast interior blitz or edge pressure that beats the protection before the fake fully develops will collapse the pocket before the deep read comes open, so watch for A gap or edge blitzers crashing early.
Run this on early downs, especially 1st and 2nd and short to medium yardage, so the play-action fake carries maximum credibility off the Triple Option and Read Option looks in this set.
Check the safety alignment before the snap. Two high safeties who stay disciplined post snap signal zone coverage, and that is when the intermediate crosser sitting in the void becomes your best target.
If the defense shows single high or the strong safety creeps down into the box pre snap, expect man coverage or a run blitz, and you should be ready to hot route your outside receiver into a quick out or speed out to beat aggressive corners.
Mix this play into a sequence after running actual Triple Option or Read Option from the same formation a few times, so the defense starts biting on the run fake and the play-action window stays open.
Use max protect or slide protection hot routes if you see a heavy blitz package showing pre snap, since the deep read takes time to develop and the quarterback needs a clean pocket to hit the shot play.
