Read Option out of Pistol in the Full Panther set is a true zone read run play that puts the ball in the QB's hands to attack the edge defender's leverage. The offensive line blocks a standard zone scheme to one side while the QB reads the unblocked defensive end: give to the HB on the zone track if the end crashes down, or pull and attack the edge himself if the end stays home. This is a run play designed to beat gap-sound fronts and overly aggressive DE contain, not a pass concept, so the primary read progression is purely the backside DE's first two steps after the snap.
Watch the backside defensive end pre-snap, if he is crashing hard down the line on every snap the offense will start pulling the ball, so mix his run fits between staying home and attacking downhill. Identify if the defense is running scrape exchange with a linebacker replacing the DE on the edge, this is the primary counter to zone read and takes away the QB keep option entirely. Check safety depth and box count before the snap, stacked boxes with 8 defenders in the run fit shut down both the give and the keep by eliminating clean gaps. Post-snap, key the play-side linebacker's pursuit angle since over-pursuing to the HB fake opens a cutback lane if the QB keeps, so disciplined LBs must stay square and read mesh point. User-controlled defenders spying the QB or crashing the mesh point immediately signal the defense is selling out to stop the option, which should trigger a shift to play-action counters like PA Boot Rt from the same set.
Pre-snap, check the defensive end alignment on the read side and confirm the box count before the snap since this play needs a numbers advantage to hit consistently.
Against a 4-3 or odd front with a wide 9-technique end, the pull read is live more often, so be ready to take off with the QB rather than force the give.
Use manual control on the QB after the mesh point so you can accelerate through the crease immediately once you decide to keep, since hesitation lets pursuit defenders close the alley.
Pair Read Option with PA Boot Rt or PA Triple Opt from the same Full Panther set so the defense has to respect both the zone read run action and the play-action boot off similar mesh footwork.
Best called on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) or in short yardage since the QB run threat forces linebackers to hesitate, opening cutback lanes for the HB.
Avoid this call against disciplined scrape exchange defenses that assign a spy or extra defender specifically to the QB keep, since that erases the numbers advantage the read is designed to create.
