Slants out of the Pistol Full Panther set is a quick-hitting man beater built around a full complement of slant routes attacking underneath and intermediate zones on both sides of the formation. The concept forces defenders to break on tight angles, giving the quarterback fast access reads against off-man and zone alike since the ball comes out on rhythm. The primary progression starts with the boundary slant against off coverage, then works to the field-side slant, and finally checks down to the underneath crosser or backfield option if both are capped by underneath defenders.
Man coverage without safety help over the top is the biggest weakness this play exploits, since slants create instant separation against trail technique. Watch linebacker depth at the snap. If linebackers sit shallow or blitz, the slant behind them opens up immediately for an easy completion. Cover 3 with a hard flat corner squeezes the boundary slant, so look to the field side slant or the crosser working away from the flat defender. User controlled defenders sitting in shallow hook zones or lurking underneath can jump the inside slants, so keep an eye on any user leaving assignment to rob the middle read. Cover 4 quarters shells with disciplined corners re-routing receivers to the sideline slow down this play, forcing a check down or the backfield outlet quickly.
Fire this out of Pistol on early downs to keep the offense ahead of the sticks with a quick, low risk throw that punishes off man and soft zone alike.
Pre-snap, identify if corners are pressed or off. Against press, hot route your primary slant to a quick slant or fade release to avoid a jam disrupting timing.
Watch for two-high shells before the snap. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4, target the slant away from the flat defender since the underneath zone drops leave a natural window between the corner and linebacker.
Pair this with PA Boot Rt to keep linebackers honest with play action after you have hit slants a few times, since defenders will start to squat on the quick routes.
Use Slants on third and short to medium since the route depth and quick timing consistently gets the ball out before pressure arrives, especially against nano blitz packages that bring extra rushers.
Mix in Read Option and Triple Option from the same set to keep defenses guessing between run and quick pass, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.
