Read Option WK out of the Pistol Full Panther set is a weak side zone read run play that puts the mesh point read on the play side defensive end. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme flowing weak, while the quarterback reads the unblocked edge defender to decide between handing off on the inside zone track or pulling it and attacking the perimeter himself. This is a pure run play designed to punish aggressive edge defenders and gap-shooting fronts, with the primary read progression being defensive end crash versus contain, followed by the quarterback's eyes on the alley defender if he keeps it.
Watch the play side defensive end pre-snap alignment, if he is lined up wide in a contain technique the defense is coached to force the give every time Identify if the defense is running a scrape exchange, where the defensive end sits and a linebacker loops around to take the quarterback, this is the primary counter to this play Look for an overhang defender or slot corner cheating down into the box, that is a sign the defense is keying the edge run and will fill fast against both the give and keep options Check safety depth before the snap, a single high safety cheating toward the weak side signals extra run support and makes the keep read risky without a lead blocker Post-snap, track linebacker flow, if the play side linebacker flies downhill immediately without reading the mesh point this play will hit big on the keep since the alley is now open
Check the box count before the snap and confirm you have a numbers advantage to the weak side before calling this up
Use this against defenses that show heavy or stacked fronts to the strong side since the weak side read isolates a single defensive end
If the CPU or user defender crashes hard on the running back every single time, hot route a receiver into a quick bubble or slant to hold the alley defender and open up the keep read
Pair this with HB Power O or HB Dive WK earlier in a series so the defense commits to stopping downhill runs, then hit them with the keep read on Read Option WK once linebackers start flowing hard
Best used on early downs or short yardage third downs where defenses are more likely to sell out against the run and leave the edge unaccounted for
