Slants from Pistol Doubles is a quick-hitting man beater built on double slants from both outside receivers, with the two slot receivers running quick outs to the flats underneath. Both outside WRs break inward at a shallow depth and cross the field, while the slot receivers occupy the flat defenders to clear space for the slant window. Primary read progression is left to right: check the near-side slant first for a hot throw against blitz, then work to the backside slant if the underneath window is clogged, with the flat routes serving as the checkdown against off-man or soft zone corners.
Man coverage on the outside with no safety help over the top is the biggest tell that both slants will win immediately off the line. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow droppers will squeeze the slant lanes and force you to rely on the flat routes instead. Cover 3 with a sunk middle safety and slow-flowing linebackers is vulnerable since the slants sit right in the seam between underneath zones. If you see a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow hook or flat, that lurk threat can jump the slant break, so use the opposite side route to counter. Press man with inside leverage corners is the best defense against this play since it disrupts the slant timing right at the stem.
Fire this out of Pistol Doubles on early downs or third and short when you expect man coverage or Cover 3 with tight underneath zones.
Pre-snap, look for corners playing press or off-man alignment on the outside receivers since the slant angle exploits leverage they cannot recover from.
If the defense shows blitz off the edge, hot route the near slant into a quick 3 step throw and get the ball out before the pressure arrives.
Pair this with Four Verticals or PA Post Shot in the same set to punish safeties who key on the quick slant tendency and start jumping the underneath routes.
Use Curl Flats or Middle Hook on the following snap to keep linebackers honest if they start sitting on the slant crossers.
