HB Counter out of Pistol Doubles is a gap scheme run play built on misdirection, pulling the backside guard and tackle to lead through the hole while the play side blocks down to seal the edge. The diagram shows the HB aligned in the pistol behind the QB, taking a counter step away from the play call before pressing back downhill through the pulling blockers. This is a pure run play with no route concepts attached, designed to attack overaggressive linebackers and gap-shooting defensive fronts by getting them flowing the wrong direction before the ball cuts back through the counter hole.
Pre-snap, identify the linebacker depth and gap alignment since counter is most effective when the defense shows a tight, aggressive front expecting inside zone or dive concepts. Watch for safeties rotating down into the box pre-snap, which indicates a run blitz package designed to beat gap schemes before the pullers even get to the hole. Post-snap, key on the backside defensive end and any user-controlled defender crashing hard down the line, since disciplined edge players who stay home can blow up the counter before the pullers arrive. If the defense is running a fast-flow linebacker scheme or a 3-4 under front with quick-trigger linebackers, this play can get strung out for a loss, so avoid calling it into heavy blitz-happy defenses. Zone defenses with linebackers reading run gaps and staying square will struggle to react to the misdirection, making this an effective counter to teams that sit back in Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells.
Run this on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium yardage, to keep your play-calling balanced and set up later play-action shots off the same formation.
Before the snap, check for stacked boxes or safeties creeping down into the alignment since that signals run blitz and you should consider audibling to a quick pass instead.
Use your user-controlled blocker, typically the pulling guard or tackle, to identify the first threat off the edge and seal him so the HB can cut off your hip.
Pair this call with HB Zone and HB Dive from the same set so the defense cannot key on one blocking scheme, then hit them with Read Option or PA Ctr Waggle once linebackers start flowing hard to the counter side.
Against aggressive user defenders who crash down immediately, bounce the run outside since the misdirection will have pulled extra defenders inside the box.
