PA Ctr Waggle is a play-action rollout out of Pistol Doubles that sells a center run fake before the quarterback waggles to the right edge. The route concept stacks a deep comeback and a corner route on the backside, a quick out breaking away from the boot, and a wheel plus deep corner combo on the frontside to stretch the sideline vertically and horizontally at three levels. This is a man beater built to punish overpursuit on the run fake, with the primary read progression going from the shallow out on the roll to the intermediate corner route, then working back to the deep comeback if the pocket holds.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage with linebackers biting on the run fake is the ideal matchup since the comeback and corner routes create natural separation against trailing defenders. Watch for a flat defender sitting on the boot side pre-snap, if a corner or safety is squatting outside the numbers he can jump the quick out and undercut the throw. Cover 3 with a hard-charging edge defender can collapse the pocket before the corner route develops, so identify pass rush lanes before the snap. Look for a lurking linebacker or safety sinking underneath the corner route after the play fake, that is the user threat most likely to jump the throwing lane. Two high safeties rotating down post-snap into the flat signal a defense selling out to stop the boot, which opens the backside comeback route as the answer.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs or in normal run/pass splits so the play fake actually holds linebackers and safeties for a beat.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, the comeback and corner routes have room to work against soft coverage.
Use the quick out as your hot route answer against blitz looks since the quarterback rolling out can get the ball out fast before pressure arrives off the edge.
Pair this with HB Zone or HB Dive from the same set earlier in a series so the defense starts biting on run action, then punish that aggression with the waggle boot.
If the corner blitzes off the edge you are rolling toward, get rid of the ball on the out route immediately rather than trying to extend the play.
