Read Option Wk lines up in Pistol Doubles with the QB reading the play side end on a zone read handoff to the HB, who takes the weak side track behind the offensive line's zone blocking. The diagram shows the QB stepping up to make the mesh point read while the HB path breaks weak, with no route concepts shown since this is a designed run play rather than a pass or RPO. This is a run play built to attack light boxes and outside leverage, with the primary read being the backside end: give on the dive track if he crashes down, pull and keep if he stays home to attack the edge.
Watch the play side defensive end pre-snap for hard alignment crashing inside, since that is the trigger for the QB keep read. Key the weak side linebacker depth, if he is stacked too far inside he cannot fit the edge in time once the QB pulls. Look for scrape exchange technique from the defense, where the end sits and the linebacker scrapes over the top, since this eliminates the keep lane and forces the dive read every time. Man coverage on the backside with no extra run support in the box is where this play hits hardest, since the QB run adds a hat the defense has not accounted for. Overloaded fronts with a spy or contain defender assigned to the QB shut this down quickly, so avoid calling it into heavy blitz packages showing edge pressure.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box for the best angles. Identify if the defense is showing man or zone pressure off the edge, since a hard crashing weak side end almost always means an easy pull read for the QB. Use the QB run threat to influence the second level linebackers, then sequence into Jet Inside Zone or HB Zone later in the series once the defense starts keying run fits weak. Pair this with RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Zone Alert Bubble to keep defenders honest on the perimeter and slow down aggressive scrape exchange linebackers. Best called on early downs or short yardage when defenses expect a straight handoff, since the deception in the mesh point punishes overpursuit.
