Four Verticals from Pistol Doubles sends both outside receivers and both slot/TE options straight up the field on go routes, with the four vertical stems spread from numbers to numbers to stress every deep zone defender. The HB stays in to check release and flare into the flat as a checkdown, giving the QB a five-man route concept off a clean pocket. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to attack the seams and overload deep zone defenders, with the primary read working from the seam routes (the two inside verticals) to the boundary go routes, then down to the HB flare if everything is capped.
Identify two deep safeties pre-snap for Cover 2 or Cover 4, which tells you to target the seams between the corner and safety before the safety can rob the inside route. A single high safety signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, so look to isolate one vertical route on the deep third defender to that side, usually the field side seam. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled safety sitting in a deep zone lurk spot, since that defender can rob one of the inside verticals if the QB stares it down. Check linebacker depth at the snap: shallow linebackers dropping late into hook zones can undercut the seam routes if the throw is delayed. This concept struggles against Cover 4 quarters or a well timed Cover 2 sink with disciplined safeties, so if both safeties stay deep and split the field evenly, look to the HB flare or move to a different play in the set like Slants or Y Shallow Cross.
Pre-snap, check the safety alignment: two deep safeties invite a seam throw between the corner and safety, while a single high safety means you want to isolate one deep third defender with two verticals on the same side. Use hot routes to convert one outside go into a comeback or dig if you see press man, since Four Verts is more explosive against off coverage or zone shells. Save this play for down and distance situations where you need a chunk play or a touchdown, such as 2nd and long or red zone fringe, since it takes time to develop and is not a quick game answer. Pair it in sequence with Curl Flats or Middle Hook from the same set so linebackers and safeties respect shorter zone drops before you hit them over the top. Against aggressive user blitzers, motion or check the HB release to buy the QB extra time, since the four verticals need a few extra ticks to clear underneath defenders.
