RPO Zone Alert Bubble is an RPO out of Pistol Doubles that pairs an inside zone run with a bubble screen alert to the slot receiver. The quarterback reads the play side linebacker or nickel defender after the snap: if that defender crashes down to fill the zone run lane, pull and throw the bubble to the flat; if he sits or bails into coverage, hand the ball off and let the zone blocking work. This is a versatile zone beater against light boxes and a run play against defenses that stay honest with numbers in coverage, giving you a low risk conflict read on one key defender.
Defensive Reads
Watch the play side linebacker depth at the snap, if he shoots downhill into the line immediately, the bubble throw is already open behind him. Key the slot corner or nickel alignment pre-snap, a defender playing tight man coverage on the bubble receiver takes away the easy pitch and forces you into the run read. Look for user controlled defenders spying the bubble lane, since a jumped throw here can turn into a pick six if the user reads the RPO and sits the flat. Zone shells with a hard flowing linebacker to the run side are the easiest coverage to beat, while disciplined defenses that keep linebackers square and let the nickel play the flat shut this play down. Blitz packages that bring extra defenders off the edge or through the A gap can beat the run action before the mesh point, so identify pre-snap blitz indicators like walked up safeties or crashing defensive ends to know when to speed up the decision.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and count defenders in the tackle box against your blockers to decide if the run or throw is already the better outcome.
Identify whether the slot cornerback or nickel is playing off man or sitting in a zone drop, since a soft corner over the bubble receiver signals an easy pull and throw for a quick gain.
Use hot routes sparingly here since the RPO read is built into the play, but consider motioning the slot receiver pre-snap to get a free access release on the bubble against man coverage.
This play works best on early downs (first and ten, second and short) when defenses are still guessing between run and pass fits, and it punishes linebackers who cheat toward the run.
