Curl Flats out of Pistol Doubles is a classic three-level stretch concept designed to attack zone coverage on the perimeter. The backside receiver runs a deep out breaking away from the formation, the left slot receiver runs a curl route sitting down around 10-12 yards, and the right receiver runs a vertical seam up the numbers while the running back releases to the flat underneath. With five in protection, the primary read progression starts at the curl in the flat combo on the left, working from the flat defender to the curl sitting behind him, then working to the backside out or the vertical shot on the right if the defense rotates coverage away from the concept.
Key the flat defender first, whether it is a cornerback sitting low in Cover 3 or a linebacker in Cover 2, because his depth and width dictate whether the flat route or the curl sitting behind him comes open. Watch for a user-controlled defender lurking in the curl window, since aggressive human defenders will often abandon zone assignments to jump the curl route, opening up the flat or backside out route. Against Cover 3 with a single-high safety, the vertical route on the right can stress the deep third defender if the corner bites on anything underneath, so track the safety's leverage before deciding whether to throw the seam. If the defense shows Cover 4 or Cover 2 Man with press corners, this concept becomes tougher to execute cleanly since man coverage on the flat and curl routes eliminates the natural zone windows, so be ready to check into a hot route or take the checkdown. Watch for disguised blitzes off the edge since the protection is a standard five-man scheme, and if a nano blitz or extra rusher shows late, get the ball out quickly to the flat or curl rather than holding for the deeper routes.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two-high or single-high safety, because this concept thrives against Cover 2 and Cover 3 zone drops where the flat and curl combo creates a natural high-low read on the underneath defender. Use the curl-flat side as your primary read on third and medium since the sit route in the curl window is a built-in answer versus zone drops from linebackers and nickel defenders. If you diagnose man coverage pre-snap, hot route the running back's flat route into a wheel or check him down quickly since the flat concept is more of a zone beater and loses value against man match schemes. Pair this play with Four Verticals or PA Post Shot in the same set to keep defenses honest, since both use similar formation motion and force zone defenders to respect the vertical shot before committing underneath. Use Slants or Jet Touch Pass Fk HB as a quick-hitting complement earlier in a series to bait linebackers into sitting shallow, then come back to Curl Flats to hit the curl window once they overcommit.
