PA Deep In runs a play-action fake out of Pistol Doubles to hold the linebackers before releasing four receivers into a deep in combo. Both outside receivers push vertical seams that break hard into deep in routes crossing the middle at roughly 15-18 yards, while the two slot receivers (one to each side) run out routes that sit underneath and to the flats to clear space for the ins. The HB fakes the run action and checks release out of the backfield as the fifth read after the play-action fake. Primary progression starts with the backside deep in (the route breaking away from initial defender leverage), works to the frontside deep in, then checks down to the underneath out routes if the middle is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single high safety looks since this play is built to exploit Cover 1 and Cover 3 with the deep in routes settling in the soft spot behind linebackers. Watch the strong safety and free safety depth at the snap, if they bail deep immediately it confirms zone coverage and opens throwing windows underneath the deep ins. Post-snap, key the linebackers for a delayed blitz or a lurk drop into the deep in throwing lane, since user-controlled defenders sitting on the crossers can jump the route. Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties shut this down by taking away the deep in windows, forcing a check to the underneath out routes. If the defense shows man coverage with no safety help over the top, look for the deep in to win against man leverage since the route breaks flat across the field away from trailing defenders.
Usage Tips
Sell the run fake with the play-action button timing so linebackers step up and open the passing lanes for the deep in routes.
Use this against single high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 since the deep ins settle right behind the linebackers and in front of the deep safety.
If you see Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells pre-snap, be ready to check down to the underneath out routes early since two deep safeties can rob the deep in windows.
Pair this with Four Verticals or PA Post Shot in your play-calling sequence so defenses respect the vertical shots and stop sitting on intermediate crossers.
Best called on second and medium to second and long when defenses are more willing to bite on the run fake and drop into off coverage shells.
Watch for user-controlled linebackers spying the deep ins, if you see one sitting in the throwing lane, work the opposite side deep in or dump to the out route.
