Cover 2 Man is a five man man to man coverage shell out of Nickel with two deep half safeties playing over the top. The two outside corners and the slot corner lock up their receivers in man coverage while the two linebackers underneath take the running backs or tight ends man to man, and the two deep safeties split the field to erase any vertical shots over the top. This is a man coverage defense built to jump quick game and shallow crossers while leaning on the safeties to bail out any deep man beater route that gets loose downfield.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect a heavy pass concept and want a physical man look without giving up the deep middle

Bump your slot corner or nickel defender up into the receiver's face pre snap to disrupt timing on quick out and slant combos that attack man coverage

Use the flat defenders and underneath linebackers to jam any drag or shallow cross concept, since the deep safeties are locked into their half and will not help underneath

Pair this call with Cover 3 Sky Press or Cover 1 Robber Press in your play calling sequence so the offense sees similar pre snap alignment but gets a different coverage shell after the snap

Avoid this call against heavy four verticals or double moves from elite deep threats unless you are confident in your corners winning their one on one matchups, since the safeties are occupied with two deep halves
