Cover 3 Sky KO is a zone coverage defensive play out of the Nickel Wide set that rolls one safety down into the box (the Sky) to add an extra run and flat defender while the other safety plays deep middle third responsibility. The three deep defenders (both cornerbacks and the deep safety) split the field into thirds, while underneath defenders including the Sky safety, both linebackers, and the nickel corner clog the curl to flat and hook zones. The primary read progression starts with the deep middle third safety keying the quarterback's eyes, then flows to the curl to flat defenders reading number two receivers for flat or seam threats, and finishes with the run support fit since the Sky safety is the extra man against inside zone and stretch runs.

Defensive Reads

Read the running back's release pre-snap since Cover 3 Sky is designed to be strong versus run to the Sky side, so if the back releases away from the rolled up safety you may be light in that flat. Key the number two receiver post-snap, since if he runs a quick out or flat route the Sky safety should be there to jump it, but if the offense sends him vertical on a seam you must get depth quickly to avoid a big play. Watch for offenses running mesh or drive concepts underneath, since the natural void between the underneath zone defenders and the deep thirds can be exploited by crossing routes if linebackers do not sink properly. This coverage struggles against high low stretches on the deep outside thirds, so if you see a corner route or deep out combined with a flat route, be ready to user the corner defender to contest the sideline throw. Blitz packages that pull the Sky safety into pressure will leave the run fit vulnerable, so if the play call includes any additional pressure be sure to fill the gap responsibility with a linebacker to prevent explosive runs.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or second and medium when you expect balanced run pass calls since the Sky rotation gives you an extra run defender without sacrificing your deep thirds.

Use this play against Gun Bunch or 3x1 formations where offenses try to flood one side with three receivers, since the Sky safety helps double team the flat and prevents easy quick game completions.

Pair this with Cover 3 Cloud in your play calling sequence so offenses cannot key on which corner is rolling down to help versus quick outs and flat routes.

Watch for offenses attacking the seams between the deep thirds and the underneath zone, and be ready to user the deep middle safety to jump any dig or post route that settles in that window.
