Breakdown

Tampa 2 Contain lines up out of Nickel Wide personnel and drops into a two deep safety shell with the Mike linebacker sinking into a deep middle hole zone drop, mirroring the classic Tampa 2 look. The two corners sink into deep outside thirds while the underneath defenders spread into short zone drops across the middle and flats, with all four down linemen rushing under contain discipline to keep the quarterback boxed in the pocket. This is a zone coverage snap built to defend both the deep middle seam and outside verticals, making it a strong answer against play-action rollouts, deep crossers, and man beater route combos that try to attack the middle of the field. The primary read progression starts with the Mike linebacker in the deep hole to close any post or seam throw, then works out to the two deep safeties over the top of vertical routes before checking down to the underneath zone defenders.

Defensive Reads

Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap splitting the field evenly, which confirms the Tampa 2 shell and tells the offense you are protected over the top on vertical routes. Key the Mike linebacker depth at the snap, since a shallow drop leaves the deep middle hole exposed to a well timed seam or skinny post. This coverage is vulnerable to quick out routes and flat concepts run before the underneath zone defenders can widen, so watch for hitches and quick slants attacking the numbers. Look for offenses stacking receivers or running mesh concepts to occupy the underneath zone defenders and create natural picks against the shallow crossers. Contain rushers from the front four should force the quarterback to hold the ball, so track pocket integrity and be ready to spy scrambling quarterbacks who escape the pocket on designed rollouts.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect a play-action shot play or vertical shot down the middle of the field.

Use pre-snap motion to identify if the offense is running a heavy man beater concept, since Tampa 2 Contain shuts down deep crossers and posts that attack the traditional Cover 2 hole.

Hot route your flat defenders into hard flats if you see a lot of quick game or bunch formations trying to flood the short zones underneath.

Pair this call with Cover 2 Invert or Cov 2 Invert Hard Flat earlier in a series to disguise your shell, then switch to Tampa 2 Contain to bait the quarterback into throwing the deep middle seam route into the sinking linebacker.

User the Mike linebacker in the deep hole to jump any seam or post route, then work back to the flats if the quarterback checks it down.
