Defensive Reads

Watch for trips or bunch formations that overload one flat since the invert corner can get picked or rerouted by natural traffic in the route concept. Pre-snap, check if the offense audibles into a hot route on the outside receiver attacking the flat immediately, that is the tell they are trying to beat the inverted corner before the rotation completes. Post-snap, key the quarterback eyes to the flat first since that is where this coverage bites hardest, then flow to any receiver working the hook zone against your linebacker or nickel defender. Disguise the coverage by aligning your corners and safeties like a standard cover 3 or press man look pre-snap, then let them invert at the snap to bait quarterbacks into throwing hot reads into coverage. Pair this play with Cover 3 Cloud and Cover 3 Sky Press in your call sheet so opposing quarterbacks cannot key on corner depth pre-snap and have to guess whether the flat is inverted or the corner is playing off man. User the flat defender on the receiver side you expect the ball to go to most since the AI can be late reacting to comeback routes breaking back to the sideline. Mix in Cover 2 Man and Cover 2 Invert from the same personnel group to keep run fits and coverage rotations looking identical, forcing the offense into presnap indecision on RPO reads.
