Breakdown

Cover 3 Sky Press is a zone defense out of the Nickel Wide set that shows press alignment on both outside corners with a three deep, four under shell. Both boundary corners jam at the line before dropping into deep thirds, the two linebackers sink into underneath hook/curl zones, and the nickel defender flows to a shallow flat/hook zone with an aggressive trigger. The slot defender to the strong side keys a quick flat drop, giving this call its Sky designation with the safety rotating down to support the run and the flat instead of staying deep. This is a zone beater against quick game concepts and shows built to disguise the run/pass conflict for the strong safety.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the slot alignment and motion to confirm which side the nickel is rotating to for the Sky flat responsibility. Post-snap, key the strong safety immediately since his run/flat trigger is the signature tell of the Sky variant versus a standard Cover 3 shell. This shell struggles against deep out and comeback routes to the flat side since the corner is playing press technique and can get beat off the line by a hard release. Look for offenses attacking the seams between the deep third corner and the underneath hook defender, especially on the four verticals or bench route combos. User the middle linebacker to rob crossing routes and shallow drags, since the base zone drops can leave a window over the middle for man beaters.

Usage Tips

Use this call on early downs when you expect play-action or run concepts since the Sky rotation gets extra run support without sacrificing the deep thirds.

Press coverage on the outside receivers disrupts route timing on quick game and rhythm throws, so call this against teams that live on hitches and quick outs.

Pair this with Cover 3 Cloud in your play-calling sequence so offenses cannot key on where the extra flat defender comes from pre-snap.

Watch the offensive formation for stacked or bunch releases against the press corners, since press technique can be beaten by immediate picks if you do not user the corner to fight through traffic.

Save this for third and medium or third and long situations where the deep thirds and underneath hook zones can squeeze the sticks against curl and dig combos.
