Nickel Blitz 3 is a five-man pressure package built on top of a Cover 3 shell, sending both slot corners on blitz angles off the edges while the underneath zone defenders sink into short landmarks. The three deep defenders drop into deep thirds, with the two outside linebacker-depth players carrying vertical routes to the deep sideline zones and the middle defender spinning to the deep middle third, while the low-hole defender sits underneath to rob crossers and shallow drags. This is a zone blitz designed to disguise pressure while keeping three-deep, one-under zone integrity behind it, and the primary read progression for the defense is to trigger the blitz off the snap key, then work from the underneath hole defender out to the deep thirds if the quarterback holds the ball.
Defensive Reads
Watch for offenses attacking the vacated slot area immediately after the blitzing defenders vacate their alignment, since quick outs and slants to that side are the first answer against this pressure. Key on the running back and tight end releasing into the pattern, since they are the most common outlets against five-man pressure and will show up in the hole defender's zone. If the offense comes out in four verticals or trips bunch, expect stress on the deep thirds since the blitzing corners cannot help over the top once they commit to the rush. Post-snap, track whether the quarterback resets and looks to the opposite hash from the blitz side, which usually signals he identified the pressure and is trying to exploit the deep third away from traffic. This call gets exposed by hot naked bootlegs and rollouts away from the blitz side, so be ready to spy contain if the offense shows run-pass option tendencies pre-snap.
Usage Tips
Disguise this call by showing a two-high shell pre-snap and rotating to Cover 3 at the snap so the quarterback cannot get a clean pre-snap read on the blitz.
Use this on third and medium to third and long situations where offenses expect a standard zone drop and are not anticipating extra pressure off the slot.
Mix this in after running a base Cover 3 Match or Cov 3 Buzz Match earlier in the series so the quarterback sees the same shell and does not expect the added rushers.
Spy the underneath hole defender manually with the right stick to jump shallow crossers and quick game throws that offenses use to counter blitz looks.
Pair this call with Cover 1 LB Blitz or Dbl Safety Blitz in the same game plan to keep the offense guessing between man pressure and zone pressure out of similar pre-snap looks.
