Cover 3 Buzz Match is a match zone coverage call out of the 4-2-5 Over G set that disguises a three deep, four under shell with a buzzing safety who rotates down into the underneath zone at the snap. This is a zone beater on defense, meaning it flips route matching rules based on the routes the offense declares, so the defense reads and reacts rather than sitting in static zone drops. The primary read progression for the user is the flat to curl to deep third defenders, since the buzz safety and the corners will match verticals and out breaking routes while the Mike and Will linebackers wall off crossers and shallow drags underneath.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is in a two by two or three by one set, since match rules change the buzz safety's landmark depending on which side declares the number three receiver vertical. Post-snap, key the number two receiver to the buzz safety's side. If he releases vertical, the safety matches him man to man in the deep third rather than sitting in a static zone. Watch for shallow drag and slot fade combos, since this coverage is built to pattern match those releases and should not be beaten by simple crossing routes.
