Breakdown

1 Double WR1 out of the Over G 4-2-5 Big Nickel set is a pass concept built around a double move or high low read attacking one side of the field, designed to isolate the WR1 against the shaded corner while a secondary route occupies the intermediate zone or hook defender. The blocking scheme keeps extra protection in to handle four man rushes, giving the quarterback time to work the WR1's release before checking down. This is primarily a man beater against press or trail technique, though it also has zone beater value versus Cover 2 and Cover 3 if the flat defender bites on the underneath route, and the primary read progression starts with WR1's release and separation before working back to the secondary receiver on the same side.

Defensive Reads

Watch for two high safeties rotating down to a single high shell after the snap, this signals Cover 1 or Cover 3 and tells you WR1 will get safety help over the top. If the cornerback aligned on WR1 is playing off man or trail technique with no safety help showing deep, this play beats him clean and should be your first read. Identify user controlled defenders sitting in a lurk position near the intermediate zone, since a smart user will jump the secondary route and bait you into forcing the WR1 throw into double coverage. Cover 2 shells with the corner jamming at the line and a safety rolling over the top will shut this concept down, look to your checkdown or move to a different play call like Cover 2 Contain beaters instead. Blitz packages like SS Blitz 2 or LB Blitz on the defensive side will pressure the quarterback before WR1 clears his route, so recognize pre snap blitz indicators such as walked up linebackers or a safety creeping into the box.

Usage Tips

Check the corner's alignment on WR1 before the snap, if he is showing press man or a hard outside shade this concept is money because WR1 has a built in release to counter that leverage.

Use your hot route to convert the underneath receiver into a quick out or drag if you see the linebackers sitting in shallow zone drops, this keeps the flat area occupied and prevents a lurk defender from jumping the throwing lane.

This play hits hardest on third and medium or third and long when defenses are more likely to play man coverage or a single high shell, since Cover 3 or Cover 1 defenders have to respect WR1's vertical stem.

Pair this call with 1 Double Slot or 1 Double TE in your play calling sequence so the defense cannot key on personnel tendencies, then come back to Double Bracket Switch later in the drive once they start jumping WR1's route early.

If the user controls a safety and rotates him over the top of WR1 pre snap, be ready to bail out to the checkdown quickly rather than forcing the ball into a bracket look.
