Breakdown

Cover 6 Willie is a split field zone coverage out of the Over G 4-2-5 Big Nickel personnel, pairing quarters coverage to one side with a sky or cloud coverage to the other. This is a zone beater deterrent, meaning it is designed to shut down the exact route combos that attack quarters and cover 2 shells simultaneously by giving the defense two different answers on each half of the field. The primary read progression for the defense starts with identifying which side the offense is attacking with vertical stems, since the quarters half will squeeze any two man releases while the sky half rotates the safety down to help on flat and curl routes.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify the passing strength and check safety depth, if both safeties are at depth expect a clean split field shell but if one safety cheats down expect the sky rotation to that side Watch the slot receiver release on the quarters side, if he stems vertically the corner should stay on top while the safety works over the top in the deep quarter On the sky side, key the flat defender getting outside leverage quickly to squeeze any quick out or flat route before it develops This shell struggles against four verticals if the underneath defenders bite on play action or run fakes, so linebackers must get their eyes up immediately after the mesh point Watch for user controlled safeties peeling to lurk in the shallow zone, especially against drag concepts that try to cross the formation and exploit the seam between the two coverage shells

Usage Tips

Use this call when you expect the offense to run route concepts that isolate one side of the field, since the split field shell lets you match strength for strength without tipping your hand

Check the offensive formation pre snap for stack or bunch releases to the sky side, since that side has extra flat help against quick game and pick concepts

Motion your slot corner or nickel defender before the snap to disguise which half is playing quarters and which half is playing sky, this keeps quarterbacks from getting a free presnap read

Pair this call with Cover 6 Invert and Cover 6 Trap in your play calling sequence so you can flip the sky and quarters sides possession to possession and keep the quarterback guessing

Best used on second and long or third and medium situations where the offense is likely to attack half the field with a designed high low or smash concept
