Cover 2 out of the Over G 4-2-5 Big Nickel set is a two deep safety zone shell designed to squeeze the intermediate passing game while keeping everything in front of the defense. The four underneath zone defenders (two corners, two linebackers) sink into curl to flat and hook zones while the two deep safeties split the field and protect against verticals down each sideline. This is a zone beater against man heavy concepts and a run stopper against outside runs thanks to the extra nickel body in the box, so the primary read progression is deep half safety to flat defender to see if a receiver settles in the soft spot between the corner and safety, commonly known as the deep outside hole.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is running a Cover 2 beater like a seam read or a post-corner combo, since those routes attack the deep middle and deep outside voids in this shell. Watch the safety depth at the snap, if they are shaded too shallow, deep crossing routes and corner routes can split the coverage over the top. Post-snap, key the flat defenders' zone drops, if they widen too fast or too slow they leave the deep outside hole exposed for a comeback or corner route. This shell gets shut down by heavy blitz packages that force man coverage matchups underneath, so watch for user blitzers crashing the flat before the zone defenders can settle. Look for the running back or tight end releasing into the deep outside hole against a corner blitz, since that is the classic user lurk exploit against Cover 2 in this formation.
Use this call on early downs or third and medium when you expect a pass and want to protect against big plays over the top while still having numbers to stop the run.
Pre-snap, check if the offense is stacking or bunching receivers to one side, since Cover 2 leaves you vulnerable to natural picks and rub routes against your flat defenders.
Hot route your flat defenders to widen or your corners to press if you diagnose a quick out or flat route combo, since Cover 2 can get exposed underneath if the shallow zones are not disciplined.
Pair this play with Cover 2 Man or Cover 2 Contain in your play-calling sequence so the offense cannot key on your deep safety alignment presnap, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball longer.
Bait the quarterback into throwing the deep outside hole route between the corner and safety, then user the deep safety to that side to jump the route for a pick six opportunity.
