Cover 2 Contain is a zone defense out of the Over G set in the 4-2-5 Big Nickel personnel, built to keep everything in front of the defense while playing sound against both the run and pass. The two deep safeties split the field into halves over the top while the corners and underneath defenders squeeze the flats and hook zones, with the contain technique instructing the edge rushers or outside linebackers to stay disciplined off the ball and force any scramble or rollout back inside. The primary read progression starts with the deep safeties reading quarterback eyes to trigger toward any vertical shot down the seams or sideline, then works down to the underneath defenders squeezing crossing routes and check downs, making this a strong zone beater deterrent against play-action rollouts and QB run designs.
Read the offensive formation pre-snap for trips or bunch sets, which often signal an attempt to flood one flat zone and overload your underneath defenders. Watch the running back release out of the backfield post-snap, since Cover 2 Contain is vulnerable to backs sitting in the flat if your linebackers get too aggressive attacking downhill. Key the deep safeties splitting hard to the numbers pre-snap, which confirms true two deep zone rather than a disguised man look, and use that alignment to anticipate corner routes and deep outs attacking the seams between the safety and flat defender. Post-snap, track the contain defender's discipline on the edge, since offenses will test this play with designed rollouts or bootleg action to see if the rusher bites on the play fake and vacates the edge. This play shuts down hitch and curl combinations underneath along with most scramble drills, but it is exposed against deep in breaking routes like a dig or a post that split the safeties if your linebackers do not get enough depth in their zone drops.
Call this on early downs or third and medium when you expect play-action rollouts or a mobile quarterback looking to escape the pocket, since the contain rule keeps rushers from overrunning the edge.
Pre-snap, identify if the offense is stacking receivers to one side or using a run pass option look, and shift your Big Nickel defender toward the strength to reinforce the flat zone.
User the deep half safety to your ball side and rob any vertical route breaking to the corner, since the flat defenders are responsible for underneath throws and you need help over the top on go routes and posts.
Combine this with Cover 2 Man or Cover 2 Match in the same set to disguise your shell, since all three plays start from a similar two deep safety alignment but change the underneath rules, making it hard for the offense to diagnose match versus true zone before the snap.
Avoid calling this against heavy four verticals concepts unless you have already shown Cover 4 Quarters or Cover 3 Match earlier in the series, since a static two deep look can get picked apart by a quarterback who has seen it repeatedly.
