Cover 2 Contain is a zone coverage shell out of the Over G 4-2-5 Big Nickel personnel, designed to keep everything in front of the defense with two deep safeties splitting the field and corners playing contain technique underneath. Pre-snap, identify if the offense is in a spread or bunch set that stacks receivers into one flat zone, since that overloads the underneath defenders and creates natural rubs against your zone drops. Call this on early downs or in obvious pass situations where you expect quick game or RPO concepts, since the underneath zone defenders sit in throwing lanes and the contain rushers eliminate scramble lanes. Pre-snap, check if the offense is running a bunch or stack formation to the play side, and consider shading a linebacker or user flowing to that side to jump curl and flat routes. Use the flat zone defenders as bait against man beater route combos like slants and out routes, then user the deep safety to the sideline you expect the throw to attack. Pair this play with Cover 2 Man in your call sheet to disguise whether you are in zone or man matchup, keeping quarterbacks guessing on hot reads and audibles. Avoid calling this against heavy vertical stack or four verticals concepts, since the two deep safeties can get stressed if underneath defenders do not disrupt the release timing.
