Pre snap, identify if the offense is running a true two back or 3x1 set, since heavy 3x1 looks will overload one safety and stress the man corner on an island against a vertical route. Watch the safeties' depth at the snap, if they are cheating up to jump underneath routes you can get burned deep, so as the user you want to stay disciplined and trust your man corners on the outside. Key the tight end or slot receiver's release, since this coverage is vulnerable to option routes and shallow crossers that split the difference between man technique and the safety help over the top. This shell struggles against option routes, wheel routes out of the backfield, and any concept designed to pick your man corners, so be ready to switch assignments manually if you see a natural collision developing. Cover 2 Man shuts down deep isolation routes and comeback routes because of the safety help, but if the offense sends four verticals with a seam read, you need to lurk the middle of the field to prevent a big play between the safeties.
Call this on early downs or second and medium when you expect a balanced play call rather than a pure shot play, since the two deep safeties take away the explosive plays while your corners handle the shorter stuff in man.
Pre snap, check if the offense is stacking receivers or bunching to one side, since that can create natural rubs against your man corners, and consider shifting your safeties or using a defensive shift to adjust leverage before the snap.
Use your user controlled defender to sit on the shallow crosser or the number two receiver's option route, since Cover 2 Man is most vulnerable to quick in cuts and slants that get lost in the man to zone conversion.
Pair this play in a sequence with Cover 2 and Cover 2 Contain from the same set so the offense sees a similar shell every time but cannot key the exact underneath rules, forcing hesitation from the quarterback.
