Breakdown

HB Dive out of Weak I Close Flex is a straight downhill run play designed to hit the interior gap quickly before the defense can flow. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking straight ahead at the point of attack with no pulling linemen, while the fullback leads through the hole to pick off the first linebacker that shows. The lone route shown is the halfback's dive path attacking the A or B gap, and this is purely a run play with no play-action element, so the primary read is a one cut decision at the line: take what the interior blocking gives you.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, count the box: if the defense has 7 or 8 in the box with safeties creeping down, this play will get stuffed and you should audible out. Watch linebacker alignment depth; linebackers playing downhill at the line signal run blitz recognition and will beat the fullback's lead block. Post-snap, key the Mike linebacker's first step, since a fast trigger into the dive gap means the defense has this play scouted and diagnosed. This play struggles against gap-control run blitzes and A-gap shoots that beat the fullback before he can seal the hole. It beats base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts playing read-and-react run fits, especially when linebackers are in man coverage on backs or tight ends and have to work through traffic to fill.

Usage Tips

Use HB Dive on early downs against defenses that stack extra men in coverage or show light boxes with only 6 or fewer defenders inside the tackles.

Check the linebacker depth pre-snap: if the Mike and Will are sitting shallow expecting run, audible into a play-action shot instead, but if they are backed off in coverage this dive hits fast.

Trust your fullback lead block and stay patient for one beat before committing to a gap, since this play rewards a single decisive cut rather than dancing behind the line.

Pair HB Dive with PA Boot Slide or PA Spot from the same Close Flex set so the run action sets up post-snap conflict for linebackers on later downs.

Best used in short yardage and 3rd and 1 or 2 situations, or early in a series to establish tempo and bait aggressive run blitzes for a counter call later.
