Breakdown

Double Under is a quick game passing concept out of Weak I with 21 personnel that leans on a mesh style shallow crossing combo underneath. The backside receiver runs a deep drag across the field while the slot man works a shallow cross underneath it, creating natural traffic for man defenders and rubbing off coverage. The outside receiver to the trips side runs a quick out, the TE releases on a wheel route up the sideline, and the HB checks out of the backfield on a slant flat into the open grass, with the offensive line sliding to protect against a four man rush. Primary read starts with the shallow cross underneath, then works to the deep drag, and comes off the wheel or flat route if the middle is jammed by a spy or underneath zone defender.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense shows two high safeties or single high, since a single high shell often means aggressive underneath zone drops that can squeeze the shallow cross. Watch linebacker alignment over the drag and shallow routes, if they sit tight to the line expecting to jam the mesh concept, the wheel route from the backfield becomes the counter punch. Post-snap, key any user controlled defender flowing to the shallow cross or drag, since spying or lurking there is the fastest way to shut down the primary read. Cover 2 with hard corners jamming the outside receivers can disrupt the out route and flat combination, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball longer. Man coverage with no help over the top on the wheel route is the biggest vulnerability, if the corner bites on the flat fake the wheel can break wide open for a explosive gain.

Usage Tips

Look at linebacker depth before the snap, if they are sitting shallow expecting the drag or mesh, target the wheel route out of the backfield for a big play down the sideline.

Use the shallow cross as your first read against man coverage since the natural mesh pick with the drag route creates immediate separation versus press or man defenders trailing.

Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, work the flat and out combination on the trips side since the underneath zone defenders will be occupied by the crossing routes.

This play pairs well with Mesh and Qk Slants from the same Close Flex set, since all three attack similar horizontal stretches and keep the defense guessing between different levels of the field.

Best called on early downs or third and short to medium since the quick developing routes get the ball out fast and limit exposure to the pass rush.
