Bench Flat out of Weak I Close Flex (21 personnel) shows a three level stretch to the right paired with a deep clear-out to the left. The backside X runs a deep dig or comeback in red while the flanker on that side takes the top off with a vertical/post breaking away, occupying single high safety help. To the play side, the TE runs a corner route from a tight split, the outside WR bends a deep out breaking to the sideline, and the HB releases from the backfield on a flat route underneath. This is a man beater built on natural high-low leverage against the flat defender and a horizontal stretch versus zone, with the primary read progressing from the corner route down to the flat if the cornerback sinks or the underneath defender widens too far.
Pre-snap, identify the deep safety alignment: a single high shell tells you the offense is hunting the play side corner route against a hole in coverage. Watch cornerback depth on the play side; a soft corner sitting off the line invites the underneath flat throw instead of testing the corner route downfield. Post-snap, track the flat or curl defender's drop angle since Bench Flat lives on that defender misjudging the HB release into the flat. Look for user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow zone between the numbers and the sideline, as they can jump the flat route and undercut the easy completion. This play struggles against sped-up Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells where the corner squats on the flat and the safety rotates over the top of the corner route, taking away both initial reads.
Check pre-snap for single high safety looks since the backside vertical and dig combo is designed to hold that safety and open up the play side corner route for a big gain.
Use the HB flat route as your quick, built-in checkdown against blitz looks, especially when the offensive line shows a hard edge rush or a nano blitz off the weak side.
Against man coverage, key the corner route first since the TE releasing outside creates natural rub potential with the play side WR's deep out, forcing a pick or blown coverage.
Against zone, especially Cover 3 or Cover 4, read the flat defender's drop: if he sinks under the corner route, come off it fast to the HB in the flat for a manageable gain.
Pair this play with HB Dive or HB Zone from the same set to keep defenses honest on early downs, then dial up Bench Flat on second and medium once the defense starts cheating linebackers into the box.
