Breakdown

PA Slot Corner opens with a play-action fake out of Weak I to hold the linebackers before the QB works a clear-out progression. The backside receiver runs a deep drag across the field while the middle route breaks into a corner from the slot, and the inside receiver runs a quick out to the flat, giving three distinct levels. A wing back releases on a shallow flat route underneath, and the fullback carries out the play-action fake before checking release, giving the QB a designed high-low read on the corner route against off coverage and man alignments.

Defensive Reads

Watch pre-snap safety depth. Two high safeties rotating late can jump the corner route, so look for a safety cheating toward the slot before the snap. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with deep zone drops, expect the corner route to be capped, forcing the QB down to the flat and drag routes underneath. User the flat or curl defender if you suspect man coverage, since jumping the underneath out route can bait the QB into the corner throw where a lurking safety can close. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge exploit the play-action hold, since the fullback and wing back are tied up selling routes instead of blocking, so an unblocked defender can beat the play before the corner route develops. Cover 2 shells with hard-charging corners can jump the flat and drag combo early, but leave the deep corner route exposed if the safety does not rotate over the top in time.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs when the defense shows two high safeties or single high looks that suggest run support, since the play action freezes linebackers just long enough to open the corner route.

Key the flat defender before the snap. If a corner or nickel is sitting low, the corner route breaking behind him becomes an automatic answer against man coverage.

Use hot routes to convert the shallow drag into a deeper crosser against zone shells that sit soft underneath, giving the QB a second window if the corner route is blanketed.

Pair this call with HB Dive or HB Zone earlier in a series to sell the play-action fake harder, then dial up PA Slot Corner once the defense starts crashing downhill on run reads.

Best used on second and medium or third and long where defenses are more likely to play zone drops and give the corner route room to sit down in the void.
