Mesh out of Weak I Close Flex (21 personnel) is a classic man beater built on crossing routes that create natural traffic underneath. The two inside receivers run shallow crossing routes at the same depth to mesh in the middle of the field, one flat route breaks out to the boundary, one route sits underneath as a check down, and the backside receiver runs a deep dig or crossing route working from one sideline to the other for a shot play against zone drops. The primary read progression starts with the mesh crossers working man coverage matchups, then works to the deep backside crosser if the mesh gets picked up, with the flat route as the outlet valve against blitz.
Watch for linebackers sitting flat footed at the snap since that indicates zone coverage and tells you to work the deep crosser rather than the mesh underneath. Key the cornerbacks on the two inside crossing routes, if they trail tightly through the mesh point without switching off, that confirms man coverage and the natural pick action will spring someone open. Look for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, this is the biggest threat to the mesh concept since it can sit right in the crossing lane and jump the shallow routes. Check safety depth pre-snap, a single high safety cheating toward the boundary side can signal a disguised blitz or rotation to Cover 3, which changes the mesh read to favor the deep backside route. Beware of a nano blitz or interior pressure package designed to collapse the pocket before the mesh routes have time to develop, since the crossers take a full count to clear traffic and get open.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage by checking for tight press alignment on the two inside receivers who will be running the mesh crossers, since this play is designed to rub off defenders in man.
If you see a single high safety look (Cover 1 or Cover 3), trust the mesh concept to win quickly underneath and get the ball out on time to avoid holding it too long in the pocket.
Against zone coverage shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4, prioritize the deep backside dig route since it will settle into open zone windows created by the linebackers biting on the mesh action.
Hot route the flat route into a quick out or speed out against teams that show heavy blitz pressure, giving you a fast outlet to beat man blitz concepts before the mesh even develops.
Pair this play with HB Dive or HB Zone from the same Close Flex set to keep the defense honest against the run, then come back to Mesh on early downs once linebackers start creeping up to stop the run game.
