Qk Slants out of Weak I Close Flex is a quick-hitting man beater built around double slants from the two inside receivers, with the backside receiver running a deep vertical to hold the corner and the flanker on a shallow drag to the boundary. The backfield adds a check release flat route out of the backfield and a fullback flare underneath, giving the quarterback a full-field spread of quick, high-percentage throws. Blocking is a standard 5-man pass protection look, and the primary read progression starts with the near slant, works to the second slant, and checks down to the flat or drag route if the middle of the field is clogged.
Pre-snap, check corner alignment and depth: tight man corners get beaten instantly by the slants, so bail into zone or press with safety help over the top if you see this personnel. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, since shallow zone drops from Cover 2 or Cover 3 linebackers will sit right in the passing lanes of both slant routes. User a defender to lurk the shallow drag and flat combination, as quarterbacks under pressure will check down there when the slants are covered. Blitz packages that bring extra pressure off the edge can rush the quarterback before the second read develops, forcing an early or inaccurate throw. Disguise Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells post-snap to bait the quarterback into throwing the slant into a zone defender sitting underneath, since this play struggles against sound zone coverage with disciplined linebacker drops.
Fire this play in quick pressure situations like 3rd and short to 3rd and medium where the ball needs to come out fast against blitz-heavy defenses.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with corners playing tight technique, since the slants will win instantly against off-man or trail technique.
Hot route the backside vertical receiver into a third slant if you diagnose zone coverage, turning this into a true triple slant concept that stresses underneath zone defenders.
Use the flat and drag combo as your answer versus Cover 2 or Cover 3 zone shells where the slants get squeezed by underneath linebackers sitting in the throwing lanes.
Pair this play with HB Dive or HB Zone out of the same Weak I personnel to keep defenses honest on early downs, then come back to Qk Slants once you see linebackers creeping up to stop the run.
