PA Spot out of Weak I Close Flex uses a play-action fake to sell the run before releasing into a classic Spot concept on the closed side. The backside receiver runs a deep corner/go route to stretch the field vertically while the flex tight end works a shallow drag underneath the spot combo, giving you a curl-flat-corner arrangement designed to break down zone drops. This is a Cover 3 beater that attacks the flat defender and hole player simultaneously, with the primary read progressing from the corner route as the shot, down to the flat/curl combo underneath if the safety rotates over the top.
Defensive Reads
Watch for Cover 3 shells with a single high safety, since the flat defender and curl player are stretched horizontally and vertically at the same time, making this route combo very difficult to cover with only three underneath zone defenders. If the defense shows Cover 4 or two deep safeties pre-snap, the corner route loses its window so expect the offense to check down to the flat or drag underneath. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is vulnerable to the corner route beating a trailing cornerback, so look for user defenders sinking too early on the play-action fake. Linebacker depth at the snap is a key indicator: if backers step up hard on the play-action, the flat and drag routes will have wide open throwing lanes underneath. Blitz packages that send extra rushers up the middle can be effective against this play since it takes time to develop off the run fake, so contain edge pressure and a spy on the play-action rollback are the best ways to disrupt the timing.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or second and short when you have already established the run out of Weak I to make the play-action freeze linebackers. Check the pre-snap safety alignment: if you see two deep safeties split evenly, the corner route has a smaller window so be ready to work the underlying spot combo instead. Hot route the backside drag into a deeper crossing route against teams that key on the flat immediately to create more separation versus man coverage. Pair this call with HB Dive and HB Zone earlier in a series so linebackers step up on run fakes, then hit PA Spot once they are biting on run action. Against aggressive user blitzers, throw the flat route quickly off the play-action peek since the flat defender is often the first to get sucked into run support.
