Mtn Shuffle Y-Trail is a man beater built around the tight end running a trail route underneath a mountain of route traffic designed to shake off tight man coverage. The Y gets a natural pick from the shuffling receivers in front of him, creating separation against linebackers and slot corners in man coverage, while the outside routes stretch the field vertically to hold safeties and clear underneath space. The primary read progression starts with the Y-Trail route working from the pick, then works outside to the flood routes if the trail gets picked up in zone drops.
Check the depth of the middle linebacker and slot defender pre-snap since aggressive man coverage on the tight end is the biggest tell that this play concept will hit. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow middle zone since a well timed spy or robber can jump the trail route and undercut the throw. Man coverage with no help over the top gets beaten badly by the natural pick created in the route mountain, so blitz heavy or Cover 0 looks are prime opportunities to attack. Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells with disciplined underneath defenders can sit on the trail route and force you to check down or hold the ball too long. Watch linebacker blitz timing off the edge since this concept takes a beat to develop and a well disguised nano blitz can get to the quarterback before the trail route separates.
Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap like tight press alignment on the outside receivers and a linebacker or slot corner shaded over the tight end before snapping this play.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you see zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 so you have an answer if the trail route gets sat on by an underneath zone defender.
This play shines on third and short to third and medium since the trail route concept creates natural rubs that get the Y open quickly for an easy conversion.
Pair this with Mtn Shuffle Z-Post and Mtn Shuffle Smash from the same formation so the defense cannot key on the mountain action and has to respect both the vertical shot and the underneath trail concept.
Use play-action shot plays or HB Zone Wk out of this same personnel earlier in a series to get linebackers to bite on run fits, opening up more room for the Y to work underneath on this play later.
