Mtn Shuffle Z-Post is a man beater out of Singleback Y Off Trio Close that attacks the middle of the field with the Z receiver pushing vertically before breaking into a post, while the shuffle motion in the trio bunch creates natural rub and pick opportunities against tight man coverage. The underneath routes occupy linebackers and shallow zone defenders, giving the post a clean throwing lane behind them. The primary read starts with the Z-Post looking for a step on the safety, then works down to the shorter shuffle routes if the post is capped by a deep half defender or the safety rotates over the top.
Identify single high safety pre-snap since that tells you the post has one less defender to threaten it over the top Watch the corner's press alignment on the Z receiver, if he is playing outside shade or bail technique he is likely sitting on the post break Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, a hard flat foot drop into the shuffle route area signals zone coverage and you should look off the post to the shorter routes Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, that user controlled defender can jump the post route if the quarterback stares it down too long Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties shut this down quickly since the post runs directly into help, in that case check down immediately to the shuffle concept
Check pre-snap for single high versus two high safety alignment because this play thrives against man coverage with only one deep defender to worry about
If you see Cover 1 or Cover 0 with tight press corners, trust the Z-Post since the trio shuffle motion should create enough natural traffic to slow down the trail defender
Against two high shells, hot route the post to a deep out or comeback to avoid throwing into the safety's zone
Use this on second or third and medium situations where the defense is more likely to sit in man coverage expecting a shorter throw
Pair this call with Mtn Shuffle Smash and Mtn Shuffle Y-Trail from the same set so the defense cannot key on the shuffle action, forcing them to respect both the post and the flat or corner combinations
