Breakdown

PA Slide Cross is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Y Off Trio Close that sells the run fake before attacking the middle of the field with a crossing route concept. The play-side design has a receiver sliding across the formation on a deep crosser while an underneath crossing route clears out the shallow zone, creating natural picks against man coverage and horizontal stress against zone drops. The primary read starts with the deep cross working from the play-action side, then progresses down to the underneath crosser as a checkdown or hole shot if the linebackers sink too deep to defend the intermediate crossing route.

Defensive Reads

Identify two high safeties pre-snap. If they stay high and do not bite on the run fake, the deep cross may be capped and you should progress to the underneath crosser immediately. Watch linebacker depth at the snap. Linebackers who step up to play the run fake open a soft window for the deep cross to work through the vacated middle of the field. Man coverage shells with corners aligned tight to the line get beaten by the natural pick created between the deep and underneath crossers, so look for the rub separating your receiver. Cover 3 defenders who sink into their zone drops without respecting the play fake will squeeze the crossing routes, so be ready to climb the ladder to the deep cross over the top of the drop. Nano blitzes or user defenders shooting the play-action gap can disrupt the pocket fast, so key on any interior defender crashing unblocked and get the ball out on the underneath route before pressure arrives.

Usage Tips

Run this from run-heavy personnel situations like second and short or first and ten so the play fake actually holds linebackers and safeties for a beat.

Check the safety alignment before the snap. Two deep shells with safeties sitting at 10 to 12 yards tell you the deep cross will be there once the play fake occupies the underneath defenders.

Hot route the underneath crosser into a shallow drag if you diagnose man coverage pre-snap, since the natural rub from the crossing traffic will separate him from a trailing corner or nickel defender.

Pair this play in sequence with Y Shallow Cross or Mesh from the same set. Running those first establishes a quick game tempo that makes defenders bite harder on this play fake later in the drive.

Use play-action rollout protection awareness. If the offensive line is sliding to protect the fake, avoid calling this into known blitz downs unless you have a hot route ready to dump it off immediately.
