HB Outside Zone out of Singleback Y Off Trio Close is a zone blocking run play that stretches the defense horizontally before letting the HB find a crease. The offensive line and TE flow laterally to seal edges and create cutback lanes, forcing linebackers to flow with the blocking scheme. The primary read progression starts with the frontside edge (contain defender), then works to the frontside linebacker fit, and finally checks the backside cutback lane if the frontside gets clogged.
Watch for run fits from the frontside defensive end and outside linebacker, since aggressive edge crash defenders that get too far upfield hand you an easy cutback lane. Identify Mike linebacker depth before the snap, since a shallow Mike who reads run fast will fill quickly and shut down the frontside stretch, forcing an early cutback decision. Check for a stacked box with eight defenders or heavy blitz packages, since this play struggles against gap exchange fronts and cross stunt blitzes that are designed to blow up zone blocking assignments. Look for user controlled defenders spying the backside cutback lane, since good players will sit and read the HB's eyes, so patience and a hard press to the frontside hole before cutting is essential. Beats base 4-3 and 3-4 zone fronts that flow hard to the ball, but gets stuffed by aggressive gap control defenses and defensive tackles who shoot inside gaps rather than reading blocks.
Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box since this play relies on winning numbers at the point of attack rather than beating a stacked front.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the Mike linebacker alignment to identify if the defense is running a 4-3 under or 3-4 look, since gap integrity dictates whether you should press the frontside hole or plan an early cutback.

On third and short or first and ten, call this after establishing PA Slide Cross or PA TE Screen from the same personnel so linebackers respect the pass action and bite on zone flow, opening the cutback lane.
If the defense shows heavy edge pressure or a 5 man front, hot route the TE to chip and release late instead of committing to a full zone block, protecting against backside penetration.
